What Keeps Employees Happy?
There are several different components that make up the work environment, each of which affects employee happiness.
- Appreciation: Leaders must know when to give the proper credit due to their workers. If their efforts go unrecognized, employees may adopt negative attitudes. Most people take pride in their work, and leaders must use this as a positive tool to keep workers content.
- Fair Pay: Every employee wants to receive fair wages. Most will start with a base salary, assuming that high levels of productivity will eventually earn them increases. A good leader has to be supportive of his or her workers when it comes to seeing that they are properly compensated. Having to beg for a raise makes most employees uncomfortable and unhappy.
- Direction: A worker is only content when they know exactly what is expected of them. The leader has to make sure that the right employee is assigned to the right job. Putting a worker in a situation that they don’t have the skills or education for is a recipe for disaster.
- Support: Employees are happy when they know their leaders are going to support them. They view the leaders as the go-betweens regarding them and the upper management. A happy employee is one that knows that their leader is going to listen to their concerns and address them if they are valid.
Therefore, it is incumbent upon the management to choose proper leaders, keeping in mind that employee happiness must always be a leading priority.
